hi there

I M ALEXA

'

Wife. Mama. Wannabe Homesteader.

There's a piece of my soul that just wants to bake sourdough bread and fill my pantry with homegrown canned goods...anybody else?! I've always felt that I was born in the wrong era, but I was recently challenged with the notion that maybe old-fashioned women like myself weren't born in the wrong time in history. Perhaps we were given old souls in this fast-paced, ultra-processed era and a desire to do things different than our counterfeit modern world for the very purpose of transforming our lives, families, and communities. Maybe its the countercultural practice of getting your hands dirty, raising your own food, and caring about what we put on our tables that might be exactly what we need in 2025 and beyond.

Now I will confess that certain fast food burgers and fries are my guilty pleasure - and we still have plenty of quick and easy foods, but since I became a mama in 2023, its been my goal to clear out the ick and replace it with real, nourishing foods for myself and my family. I've got big dreams of living on 10,000 acres and raising veggies, cattle, barefoot babies, and Golden Retrievers. But for now, I'm calling one little acre in the mountains of Colorado home in a neighborhood that gives me a fair list of do's and don'ts as far as how we can use our land. So between now and the fairytale, I'm raising laying hens, growing veggies, canning stock, and replacing the manufactured ingredients with homegrown and homemade. Farm-to-table doesn't have to be far off...you can do it too.

My backyard kitchen is a learning process, a transformational mission, but getting my hands dirty alongside my kiddos as we fill our table and bellies with REAL food is such a huge joy. Even with challenges like a short growing season, I choose to focus on whole foods and fresh ingredients in my recipes and cooking. So whether you have a potted herb on your balcony or join a local CSA, raise chickens in your backyard  or commit to making your own bread from now on, won't you join me in the revolt to live a little old-fashioned? Let's get our hands dirty and bring homegrown, homemade foods back to our tables.
